Sacred Valley
The Sacred Valley, also called Urubamba Valley after the river that flows through it, is one of the most beautiful in Peru. Its fertile plain was where maize and potatoes, essential elements of the Inca diet, were grown. The valley has reminders of the history of both the Inca and colonial periods. Machu Picchu is its most famous Inca site. The ancient city of Cusco is at its heart.
Its other attractions include the traditional Indian market at Pisac, the beautiful village of Ollantaytambo and the small village of Chinchero, located high up in the mountains. Be sure not to miss Quechua village festivals, markets, colonial churches, and Inca ruins. You can also enjoy river rafting, horseback riding and trekking.
The Sacred Valley is also home to a number of special hotels. Plenty of reasons to make the Sacred Valley part of your itinerary.
