Salta and North West
The colonial city of Salta is surrounded by sun-baked desert, dramatic valleys and the spectacular landscape of North West Argentina.
Salta is an attractive city with a central plaza dominated by its pink church. Salta has a distinctly European flavour. There are plentiful restaurants and outdoor terrace bars from which to watch the world go by.
Outside Salta, the scenery changes dramatically with bright, multicoloured rock formations, cacti and canyons that are reminiscent of Arizona. Further north, near the border with Chile at higher altitudes, you will discover large salt lakes which attract large flocks of flamingos.
The region has many small towns, vineyards and estancias, which can be used as bases or stopping points on a preplanned self-drive tour.
