Northern Cape and Namaqualand
The largest and remotest of South Africa’s provinces, the Northern Cape has a special appeal. The vast landscapes, the Orange River with its Wine Route, the desert wonders of the Kalahari and the ancient culture make it a unique destination.
There are Boer War battle sites to view, the spectacular Augrabies Falls National Park, museums and art galleries in the provincial capital Kimberley and Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, a desert park with many animal and bird species endemic to the region. There is an astronomical observatory in Sutherland and you can follow in the footsteps of David Livingstone and Moffat on their missionary journeys. Alexander Bay is ideal for hikers and bird watchers and the towns of Springbok and the gannet colony at Lamberts Bay should not be missed.
Namaqualand Flower Route shows nature’s wonders at their best as miles and miles of veld blooms into an array of colours that has to be seen to be believed.
