KZN battlefields and Drakensbergs
The Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 and the South Africa War of 1899 to 1902 were contested across the KwaZulu-Natal midlands and there are numerous sites for visitors to explore.
Isandlwana was the site of a famous Zulu victory and Rorke’s Drift was the scene of a famous siege. Tourists can visit the Talana Museum in nearby Dundee and Elandslaagte, Ladysmith and the famous Spioenkop are must sees. The museum at Ladysmith has a fine collection of war artefacts and photographs and Ulundi is where the deciding battle of the Anglo-Zulu War took place.
The mighty Drakensberg Mountains are the highest and most spectacular range in Southern Africa and ideal for mountain walks, bird watching and game viewing. Trout fishing in the mountain streams and horse riding on the trails are popular pursuits. The Drakensbergs are also regarded as one of the most interesting botanical regions.
